Redstone’s Michael Lawrence had the pleasure of sitting down with Oracle WebCenter Senior Marketing Manager Kellsey Ruppel to discuss one of Redstone’s latest solution offerings: Distributed Index.

In this Podcast, you will learn how Redstone Content Solutions can save your business valuable time and money by drastically reducing the amount of time it takes to search and rebuild your index.

Kellsey: Hey, everyone today we are happy to have Oracle Platinum Partner and WebCenter SME, Redstone Content Solution join us to discuss Distributed Index. Michael Lawrence from Redstone will discuss Redstone's Distributed Index solution launch that Collaborate 15 earlier this year.

Welcome, Redstone, and thank you for joining us today.

Michael: Thank you for having us, Kellsey. It is always a pleasure to work with you and your team, and we are very excited for the opportunity to discuss Distributed Index with our audience today.

Kellsey: Michael, you mentioned that you launched Distributed Index that Collaborate 15 in Vegas. Was that the plan all along and how did it go?

Michael: We were very fortunate to present the solution to the WebCenter Customer Advisory Board. Customers were very responsive as were members of the Oracle product management team. During our presentation we discussed our first in production deployment. We felt like this presentation created a lot of buzz, which translated to significant amount of booth traffic and a busy pre-sales and marketing team as we provided product demo after product demo.

Kellsey: Can you tell us what benefits Redstone's Distributed Index provides to clients?

Michael: Redstone's Distributed Index performs WebCenter content searches and index rebuilds significantly faster than customers are accustomed to experiencing.

Kellsey: Aren't most enterprises already conducting content searches and rebuilding their searches index?

Michael: Well, Kellsey, the answer is yes and no. Customers do perform content searches although many are not satisfied with the current search results speed, particularly for those multi-value field searches. Additionally, our market research indicated that more and more customers are performing fewer and fewer search index rebuilt if they are rebuilding their search indexes at all. Which begs the question, why would anyone knowingly ignore industry best practices and not rebuild their index? Clients told us that the reasons for not rebuilding their index was simple, that the time required to perform this task had become too time-consuming which negatively affected their business.

Kellsey: Wow, that's some very compelling information. So what is causing the current issue?

Michael: The search queries, query stacking, or queries originating from other applications have all contributed to the issues clients are facing today. As well search index rebuilds are affected by a number of factors such as the number of content items stored within the system, the number of content profiles, and even the number of security groups.

Kellsey: Well, I see where this is going, so Redstone has been able to solve this issue for Distributed Index?

Michael: Correct. What we have done is built a solution that integrates with WebCenter content and provides highly configurable rule based search functionality for clients. Distributed Index intercepts the get search results service calls and reroutes them to separate indexes for enhanced checking and index updates.

Kellsey: That's pretty amazing. What are some of the pros associated with Redstone's Distributed Index as it relates to search in index rebuilt improvement?

Michael: For starters, the integration of our solution with WebCenter content is completely transparent to end users. It leverages current out of the box functionalities such as quick search and current security roles and accounts. If there's ever an issue with Distributed Index integration, the system will default to the native search without the need of a trigger.

Kellsey: Earlier you mentioned that the solution has been deployed by customers. How have the customers felt about the steps you took to achieve Oracle Validated Integration for Distributed Index.

Michael: Oracle Validated Integration increases customers confidence through Oracle testing and verification of partner integration such as Distributed Index with Oracle products such as WebCenter Content. This program provides our joint customers with the peace of mind they want and need when integrating products with WebCenter. This lets them know the product has been tested and approved by Oracle to work with WebCenter. We are very proud of this designation and continue to look forward to providing our customers with the game-changing benefits.

Kellsey: Well, congratulations again on the OVI designation. You guys should certainly be proud. Do you have any performance numbers you can share that will highlight the benefits you just spoke about earlier, and provide the audience with the better understanding of search and index rebuild improvement?

Michael: Yes, in fact, I was hoping you would ask. I have a few different scenarios that were tested before and after the integration of Distributed Index and the speed improvements our own customers experienced. This particular customer had an environment that housed 17 million documents. For an ORA-based query with two values before the integration of Distributed Index, searches took 8 to 10 seconds. After integration, searches took only 203 milliseconds for the same type of search. But with 12 ORA values, it took over two minutes for search results to populate before the integration is Distributed Index. After the integration this search with 12 values only took 803 milliseconds.

For a full collection rebuild for over 70 million docs, it was over three months time in the past. With the integration of Distributed Index, this process is now only 21 hours long. As you can see in these results, we have taken some searches from seconds to sub-seconds, and even to some searches from minutes down to sub-seconds. And full collection rebuilds have been reduced from up multiple month process down to an overnight or over weekend.

Kellsey: Wow, Michael, that's really impressive. How can clients and prospects learn more about Distributed Index?
