What is Personalization?

Personalization is delivering online customers that “A-ha!” moment by providing the most relevant web experience possible. Personalization on the web occurs when the targeted message is unique to the site visitor.

Why is Personalization important?

  • A customer that receives a personalized experience feels a sense of importance and is more likely to become a loyal customer and brand advocate
  • Trust begins to grow between the company and the consumer
  • Employees that are provided a personalized user interface with tools and applications often feel as if they are more efficient
  • When employees feel empowered, company loyalty often increases

I wish my Website could do this!

Now It Can – with Oracle WebCenter Sites! This robust Web Experience Management (WEM) Solution produces relevant and personalized content for end-users across multiple platforms.

WebCenter Sites delivers that “A-ha!” moment to customers in three ways:

1. Implicit Personalization

Implicit Personalization presents different content and services to individuals based on their “Implied Identity” through volunteered information, navigation & click behavior and past interactions – typically tracked by cookies and analytics.

2. Explicit Personalization

Explicit Personalization presents content and services specifically chosen by individuals and lays them out on a Personal Welcome page.

3. Hybrid Personalization

Hybrid Personalization provides both Implicit & Explicit functionality to users.

WebCenter Sites Personalization Capabilities:

Deliver content directly to users based on known attributes

WebCenter Sites has the ability to identify interests of the site visitor and promote relevant content. For example, a sports enthusiast visiting the website would be presented addt’l sports-related content, as opposed to an unidentified site visitor who has not implicitly or explicitly identified themselves.

Send customers promotions based on previously ordered products

For example: A customer purchases an HD Camera on an eCommerce site. The customer’s need has been met. WebCenter Sites has the ability to “follow up” on the purchase with promotions related to previous buying habits. Marketers love this capability as a method of re-engaging web shoppers.

Deliver specific information based on a user’s geographical location

For example: 2 users access the same outdoors-man website. Using IP Addresses, WebCenter Sites determines that User 1 accesses the site from Boulder, Colorado and that User 2 accesses the site from Miami, Florida. The intent of User 1 may differ from the intent of User 2 based upon their location and WebCenter Sites reacts accordingly by delivering unique content to each user.

Display website content using information from external systems

For example: WebCenter Sites recognizes a site visitor that searched Google France (www.Google.fr) to find their site and will display content in French, their native language

Deliver dynamic and personalized webpages at the speed of a static site

WebCenter Sites’ caching infrastructure provides high-performance, distributed caching to support dynamic deployments on the largest global scale. The caching infrastructure assembles dynamic and static content on personalized pages according to targeting rules in real time, as visitors come to the site.

Imrpove brand loyalty with targeted cross-channel online customer experience

With WebCenter Sites, marketers can continually analyze and optimize their targeted campaigns to improve site stickiness, conversion rates, and customer loyalty

MySite functionality enables the user to personalize their own pages

WebCenter Sites delivers specific website assets and features such as blogs, articles, videos, etc. to be displayed on personalized welcome pages.

Are HTML Sitemaps still important?

The short answer is “Yes”.

Ease of Use for Visitors

Intuitive navigation pleases site visitors and increases the odds of them returning to the site. An HTML sitemap allows site visitors to easily navigate a website.

The sitemap serves as a ‘Table of Contents’ referencing all pages and allowing website visitors to locate pages they are unable to find by searching the site or navigating through site menus.
Typically an HTML sitemap will display a website’s navigation in a bulleted outline, and link anchor text to the page it references.

Search Engine Indexing & Page Rank

An HTML sitemap aids search engines in the process of indexing website pages. The HTML sitemap also improves and distributes Page Rank throughout all website pages.

Page Rank measures inbound links from others sites. Linking from one page of a website to another is not considered an inbound link in Google’s algorithm. What is factored into Page Rank? – The tier level of a webpage.

Tier level is an attribute used to calculate authority and importance of pages based on the navigational structure of the website. Tip: The ideal structure of a website has no more than three tiers.
Picture

Tier 1

Homepage – This is the page that your visitors will land on by typing your domain name into the address bar. For example: www.redstonecontentsolutions.com

Tier 2

This tier consists of all pages located in a website’s navigation bar, or is linked to from your Homepage. All tier 2 pages should be accessible from the Homepage with only 1-click.

Tier 3

These are pages linked to from Tier 2 pages. All Tier 3 pages should be accessible from the Homepage with only 2-clicks.
By linking to an HTML sitemap from the Homepage (Tier 1), the HTML sitemap becomes a Tier 2 page. Now that the HTML sitemap is a Tier 2 page, and the HTML sitemap links to all other pages on the site, every page is now at minimum a Tier 3 page. In the image above, the pages on the Tier 4 level would all become Tier 3 with the implementation of an HTML sitemap.

This best practice ensures that all pages are linked to and don’t end up buried deep within the site where search engines can’t locate them.

A Tier 3 structure is the preferred approach for websites. Additionally, an HTML sitemap guarantees that your site adheres to this recommended approach.

XML Sitemaps

XML sitemaps provide value for all websites. Creating an XML sitemap and submitting it to search engines allows them to crawl the website in a more effective manner.

Search engines use the XML sitemap to find every page on the site, including URLs that are not found through the regular crawling algorithms used by search engines.

XML Sitemaps are especially important for following types of websites:
